The Ultimate Guide to Decoding Your Kid's Digital Lingo

Yo Parents! Are you tired of feeling like a spy trying to decode your child’s text messages? Do you feel like you need a secret decoder ring to understand what they’re saying? Well, buckle up, because I’m PixelatedDad, and I’m here to help you crack the code of your child’s digital lingo!

Let’s start with the basics. Remember when you used to text using full words and proper grammar? Yeah, those days are long gone. Now it’s all about the abbreviations and emojis. So, when your kid sends you a message that says “LMK”, they’re not asking you to list all your favourite things, they’re saying “Let me know”. And when they send you a string of random emojis, they’re not trying to confuse you, they’re actually telling a story.

But the real fun begins when they start using internet slang. Take “AF” for example. This one is a classic. It may look like they’re sending you a weather update, but they’re actually saying “As f**k”. And what about “Lit”? It’s not a reference to a lighter or a candle, it’s actually a term that means “cool” or “awesome”.

And don’t even get me started on the TikTok lingo. If you’re a parent, you’ve probably heard of TikTok, and if you haven’t, it’s probably best you don’t start. But if you must know when your kid says “GOAT”, they’re not talking about the animal, they’re saying “Greatest of All Time”. And if they say “Mood”, it’s not about their current emotional state, it’s actually an expression of agreement or endorsement.

So there you have it, folks. A brief guide to decoding your child’s text messages. With this knowledge, you’ll never feel left out of the loop again. Just remember, the world of internet slang is constantly evolving, so keep up, or you might be left in the dark.

I’m going to create a parental glossary located here so please send over any that you have learnt or that we need to decode to help future parents.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to Google what “Slay” means. Until next time, stay pixelated! 😎

Dr. Chris Spencer, better known as PixelatedDad, is a retro gaming enthusiast and self-proclaimed geek who’s a few pixels short of a full sprite. Despite his age, he’s young at heart, often immersed in games older than his kids, with the reflexes of a sloth and the aim of a blindfolded monkey—but still determined to save the pixelated princess, one clumsy jump at a time. Beyond gaming, Chris is a distinguished computer scientist with a doctorate, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS), and a member of the Sherwood Observatory and the Planetary Society. As a Dark Sky Ambassador, he’s passionate about preserving the natural night sky and reducing light pollution. Chris is also a husband, proud dad of two sets of twins (#TwinsTwice), and a multitasker extraordinaire who balances coding, stargazing, 3D printing, and snuggling his loyal sidekick, Doggo McStuffin. Whether he’s gaming, championing dark skies, or exploring the cosmos, life for Chris is a journey worth every pixel.
