Exciting News: Representing Sherwood Observatory as a Dark Sky Ambassador!

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been asked to represent Sherwood Observatory as their Dark Sky Ambassador. As a dedicated advocate for reducing light pollution and protecting our night skies, I am honored to take on this responsibility. The night sky is a precious resource that not only connects us to the universe but also plays a crucial role in wildlife, human health, and our cultural heritage.

As a Dark Sky Ambassador, my role will encompass various activities aimed at promoting dark sky preservation and raising awareness about the impact of artificial light pollution. Here’s a look at some of the initiatives and responsibilities I’ll be undertaking:

  1. Community Outreach and Education
I’ll be engaging with local schools, community groups, and residents to spread awareness about the importance of protecting our night skies. This includes giving talks, hosting educational workshops, and creating resources to illustrate how light pollution affects both astronomy and the natural environment.
  2. Advocating for Responsible Lighting
I’ll work closely with local councils and organizations to promote responsible outdoor lighting practices. This means encouraging the use of shielded, energy-efficient lighting to reduce light spill, minimize sky glow, and maintain our night-time ecosystem’s balance.
  3. Star-Gazing Events
I’ll be supporting events and guided observation nights at Sherwood Observatory, giving people a chance to see the wonders of the night sky with reduced interference from artificial light. These events are great opportunities to connect the community with the cosmos.
  4. Supporting Dark Sky Initiatives
Whether through petitions, public awareness campaigns, or collaborative projects with other Dark Sky advocates, I’ll be working toward the establishment of designated dark-sky areas and policies that protect our skies from over-illumination.
  5. Documenting and Sharing Observational Data
As part of raising awareness, I’ll also share data and images that showcase the effects of light pollution and demonstrate the stunning celestial sights visible when artificial lighting is minimized. These visuals can be powerful tools for inspiring others to protect our night skies.
  6. Promoting Health and Environmental Benefits
I’ll be advocating for dark sky preservation from a holistic perspective, emphasizing the health benefits of natural circadian rhythms, the environmental impact on nocturnal wildlife, and the energy-saving benefits of reduced light pollution.

I look forward to embarking on this journey and making a positive impact on our community’s relationship with the night sky. Stay tuned for tips on how to reduce light pollution, and ways you can get involved. Together, we can ensure that future generations can marvel at the stars just as we do.

Dr. Chris Spencer, better known as PixelatedDad, is a retro gaming enthusiast and self-proclaimed geek who’s a few pixels short of a full sprite. Despite his age, he’s young at heart, often immersed in games older than his kids, with the reflexes of a sloth and the aim of a blindfolded monkey—but still determined to save the pixelated princess, one clumsy jump at a time. Beyond gaming, Chris is a distinguished computer scientist with a doctorate, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS), and a member of the Sherwood Observatory and the Planetary Society. As a Dark Sky Ambassador, he’s passionate about preserving the natural night sky and reducing light pollution. Chris is also a husband, proud dad of two sets of twins (#TwinsTwice), and a multitasker extraordinaire who balances coding, stargazing, 3D printing, and snuggling his loyal sidekick, Doggo McStuffin. Whether he’s gaming, championing dark skies, or exploring the cosmos, life for Chris is a journey worth every pixel.
